MY BACKGROUND
Some people find their way to psychiatry through textbooks. I found mine through nearly three decades of hands-on nursing in some of the most demanding settings in medicine: ICU and travel nursing, behavioral health hospitals, a women's substance abuse recovery program, corrections (women's state prison and county jail), and a psychiatric crisis center in downtown Denver.
In the crisis center, I saw brilliant people cycling through a system that often lacked the time or resources to look at the whole picture — nutrition, trauma history, sleep, or labs. Many were labeled "treatment-resistant" simply because no one had asked the deeper questions.
Those experiences led me to integrative and functional psychiatry — and to create the kind of practice I wished had existed for them.
MY PERSONAL JOURNEY
I also bring lived experience.
I grew up in a small rural town. At the age of 12, I experienced abuse by someone in my church who was highly esteemed. I became an overachieving people-pleaser, walking on eggshells and reading the energy of a room before I walked into it, yet never feeling like I was enough.
Later in life, multiple miscarriages and postpartum depression gave me a firsthand understanding of how identity, exhaustion, and isolation can reshape a person.
I share these parts of my story not for sympathy, but because they shape the calm, nonjudgmental, and deeply empathetic care I provide. I know what it feels like to carry invisible weight — and I know healing is possible.
Trained, certified, and continually learning.
